                                    MCC THRIFT SHOPS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

Abbotsford BC – The Mennonite Central Committee Thrift Shops in Abbotsford are open for business and want you to visit! A recent announcement regarding the closing of Above the Underground (an MCC retail training store and thrift shop run by MCC’s Employment and Community Development program) has left customers confused, assuming that all the MCC thrift shops in Abbotsford are closing.

“All of our regular MCC Thrift Shops have had people coming in saying that they’d read that we’re closing and we want to make sure that folks know we’re definitely open,” says Doug Willms, MCC BC Provincial Thrift Shop Coordinator.

MCC has three thrift shops in Abbotsford:

MCC Abby East - #5 34150 S Fraser Way (near the Greyhound Bus Station)

MCC Clothing Etc. – 31872 S Fraser Way (at Countess)

MCC Furniture and More – 31877 S Fraser Way (across from MCC Clothing Etc.)

MCC Thrift Shops support the worldwide relief, peace and development ministry of MCC – the Mennonite Central Committee. In Kenya, MCC is working with local partners to build sand dams and provide families with clean water close to home. In Laos, MCC is helping children go to school by providing school supplies, supporting breakfast programs and building schools. In Haiti, where MCC has been at work since 1958, MCC is rebuilding homes and livelihoods following the earthquake in January. These are just a few examples of MCC’s relief, development and peace work with over 1400 service workers in more than 50 countries around the world. Each purchase at one of MCC’s thrift shops supports this work.

In BC, MCC Thrift Shops last year contributed $1.6 million to MCC’s work and are on target this year to raise even more. Given that the average price of an item at any thrift shop is about $2.50, that’s an impressive statistic.

“We hope that folks will come and see the great quality items we have in each of our shops,” Willms said. “We’re open six days a week, on both sides of Abbotsford, and we have no intention of closing our doors. We are open for business!”
