Coffee for Peace: An Evening of Music and Reading
|
When you take part in the Coffee for Peace evening of music and reading at the House of James on Friday January 27th, you’ll hear great music, a reading from a fascinating new work, and support a peace initiative half a world away. Music by J.D. Miner
Coffee for Peace is organized by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC BC) and features music by J.D. Miner, a Canadian acoustic trio whose music is an eclectic collection of original jazz-blue-grass-folk music that is sure to get your toes tapping. http://www.jdminer.com/ Reading by Harold Macy
They’ll be joined on stage by Vancouver Island forester and author, Harold Macy who will be reading from his new book: The Four Storey Forest, As Grow the Trees, so too the Heart. The book is partly autobiographical as it tells the story of Macy’s life on their family woodlot. It also includes historical storytelling and explores the spiritual connection between life in the forest and the Creator. Proceeds from the sale of this book support MCC’s work in community forestry in developing countries around the world. Macy says that he was inspired to do so by scripture. “In Revelations 22:2 it says the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. I am amazed by the power of Creation manifest in our woodlot. It is not hard to visualize this magnificence soothing the raw and angry places on this earth,” he says. “With our woodlot, organic farm, and Christmas tree plantation, we feel so blessed and wish to share this with others.” Darryl Klassen, a member of J.D. Miner, has known Harold for years and has visited his woodlot many times. “Harold has a way of opening one’s eyes to the natural world that is at once scientific and profound,” Klassen says. “I have read his book twice and given numerous copies as gifts. I look forward to hearing his voice give expression to his words.” Coffee for Peace The evening also supports Coffee for Peace – an initiative of Mennonite Church Canada that supports impoverished coffee growers in a conflicted area in the Philippines. The first batch of coffee grown under this initiative is being distributed by Level Ground Coffee Company, a fair trade coffee organization based on Vancouver Island. You’ll learn more about this initiative at the coffeehouse and packages of this coffee will be available for purchase during the show, supporting this peace work being done in the Philippines. http://www.levelground.com/philippines/ Coffee for Peace: An Evening of Music and Reading takes place Friday January 27th at 7:30 pm at House of James 2743 Emerson Street in Abbotsford.
