Connecting People and Place – MCC Aboriginal Neighbours Camping Trip August 20-25, 2012 Come camping with MCC! Connecting People and Place is an opportunity for you to tour beautiful northern Vancouver Island. We will experience an old growth forest with a Mennonite forester in Campbell River, see the Umista Cultural Centre in Alert Bay, and visit with members of the Kwaguilth First Nation in Alert Bay. Together we’ll discover the history and ecology of this part of the Island. This trip is an opportunity to listen, learn and become friends as we explore the environment that sustains us all. Schedule Monday August 20: Travel day . Elk Falls Campsite in Campbell River Tuesday - Wednesday August 21 - 22: Tour a family-run Wood Lot and a healthy forest planted by Mennonite C.O.s during WW2 with Mennonite Forester, Harold Macy. We’ll visit a natural salmon hatchery and an old growth forest at the Elk River Falls. Thursday August 23: Travel to Alert Bay and set up camp. Friday – Saturday August 24 - 25: Visit with Kwaguilth elders, leaders, artists and an Indigenous Christian Fellowship in Alert Bay. We’ll also visit the Umista Cultural Centre and the Big House to experience and learn about the rich culture of the Kwaguilth people. Sunday August 26 : travel home. Schedule is tentative and may change to accommodate your suggestions or local initiatives. Free time and family activities will be encouraged. Logistics Tour participants should be prepared to be self-sufficient in a camping environment. All gear, transportation and campground expenses, entrance fees and meals are to be borne by participants. MCC is responsible for booking sites, and coordinating and leading the tour.
